National Tax Number (NTN)

A Sales Tax Registration Number (STRN) is issued to persons registered under Pakistan's sales tax laws, enabling them to legally collect and deposit sales tax.

Advance Tax

Advance Tax is tax collected or paid before the determination of a taxpayer's final annual tax liability. It is commonly charged on specified transactions and may be adjustable or treated as final tax depending upon the applicable provisions of tax law.

Withholding Tax

Withholding Tax is deducted or collected at the time of making specified payments or carrying out certain transactions. The person deducting or collecting the tax acts on behalf of the Federal Board of Revenue under the Income Tax Ordinance.

Adjustable Tax

Adjustable Tax is an amount collected during the tax year that can be adjusted against the taxpayer's final income tax liability when filing the annual income tax return, thereby reducing the amount of tax payable.

Final Tax

Final Tax is tax collected under specific provisions of the law which completely satisfies the taxpayer's liability on that particular income. In such cases, no further adjustment is generally available against that tax.

Minimum Tax

Minimum Tax ensures that certain taxpayers pay at least a prescribed minimum amount of tax even where their taxable income is low or a loss is declared, subject to the provisions of the Income Tax Ordinance.

Tax Credit

A Tax Credit is a lawful reduction in the amount of tax payable by a taxpayer under specific provisions of tax law. It encourages investment, approved expenditures and other activities recognized by the Income Tax Ordinance.

Tax Refund

A Tax Refund is the repayment of excess tax paid by a taxpayer after adjustment of the final tax liability. Refunds may arise where advance tax, withholding tax or other payments exceed the actual amount legally payable.

Tax Audit

A Tax Audit is the examination of a taxpayer's records, accounts and financial information by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to verify compliance with tax laws. The purpose of an audit is to ensure that income, deductions and tax liabilities have been correctly declared.

Tax Notice

A Tax Notice is an official communication issued by the Federal Board of Revenue requiring a taxpayer to provide information, file a return, explain a transaction or respond to any matter relating to tax compliance. Every notice should be carefully reviewed and properly addressed.

Default Surcharge

Default Surcharge is an additional amount imposed when tax is not paid within the prescribed time. It is calculated separately from the actual tax liability and continues to increase until the outstanding tax is paid in accordance with the law.
